about maggi...

Picture
Maggi is a native Houstonian and graduate from The University of Texas at Austin with a degree in Visual Art Studies and another degree in Art History.  As she was studying to become an art teacher, she yearned for more than what her art education classes provided so she took many hours in studio and art history.  These courses introduced her to a world of art, igniting a fire inside of her to see more of the world and create more.  After studying watercolor abroad in Italy one summer Maggi was hooked.

She also attended New York University, receiving her Masters in Art.  Instead of studying in New York City though, she had the opportunity to travel abroad during her summer months off from teaching.  For two summers she studied in Venice, Italy and spent a third in Berlin, Germany.  This gave her the opportunity to study under professors with international connections who introduced her to artists from around the world.  While traveling she began taking photographs of older people strolling along the streets in Spain, Germany, and Italy so most of her subjects come from these photos.  She was inspired by their strong presence in their communities and felt the paintings needed to reflect that.

She focuses on only painting the skin and drawing the rest of the figure.  With this style she is able to capture the beauty and soul of an individual from within.  The thin veil of skin that covers an older person and the light touch of a feather have the same gentler nature thus Maggi finds herself painting both subjects.  They are very different in subject, but, with both, she works in layers of vibrant colors.

She has exhibited her artwork in group exhibitions in Venice, Berlin, and Houston, Texas.  Her artwork is in many private residences throughout the U.S. and has a strong commitment from her collectors.

She currently has a studio in Houston, Texas and is an elementary school art teacher where she inspires the youngest generation to build their creative side.
